What Exactly Is GPS Truck Tracking?

GPS truck tracking employs satellite technology to keep track of their trucks.  This is the most reliable way to determine estimated delivery times.  Instead of truckers constantly phoning in their whereabouts, the GPS system allows the company to know where the truck is at any time.

The GPS truck tracking system is hooked up to an entire system in a main location.  Each truck is equipped with the device and it sends signals to a satellite which then sends signals to the main location.  A dispatcher can then monitor the trucks at any given moment and be able to tell customers when to expect delivery.

In addition to being able to monitor the trucks, the GPS truck tracking system also allows the dispatcher to warn truckers of road hazards, accidents and delays.   They can send them information through the GPS system to tell them to take a different route, thereby eliminating delays.

Some trucks transport hazardous materials.  Since 9/11, the United States has been vigilant about national security, particularly when it comes to large trucks that can be used as potential bombs.  If a truck is stolen, therefore, it is not only important to find it because of economical reasons that impact the owner, but for national security reasons.  This system will allow the truck to be tracked down if it is stolen.

The entire global positioning system, which has been shortened to GPS, was made for the shipping industry. As more goods were shipped through trucks, either on long or short hauls, it became necessary to keep track of the whereabouts of these trucks, similar as to how the FAA keeps track of airplanes.  If a product is shipped via plane, we knew where it was.  However, when things were shipped by truck, chances are no one knew where the item was or when it was expected to be delivered.  The only communication was with the truck driver, usually through CB radio.  It was inefficient and costly.  The GPS systems allowed dispatches and companies that shipped items by truck to have a general idea of delivery time.

This became even more necessary as people started making more purchases on the internet.  Trucks transport most of the merchandise that we buy.  The other two modes of transportation are airplane and train.  These are more costly and trucks are the preferred method of transporting goods.  There is more of a demand for shipping now than ever before.  Truck drivers either deliver local or across country.  There are also shipping trucks, such as those used by UPS that only handle packages that are shipped through their system.
